Private Sailing Experience in the biggest lake in Japan with Ted

Lake Biwa, or Biwako, is Japan’s biggest lake closely located at just about 10 kilometers from our spiritual capital, Kyoto. It is recognized as one of the most ancient lakes in the world, and the only lake of its kind in Japan. Biwako boasts a rich ecosystem with approximately 1,000 different species of plant and animal life, including about 60 of which are endemic. Visited by around 5,000 water birds every year, the lake has been designated as a UNESCO Ramsar Wetland since 1993.

Our sailing experience takes place in the splendor of such a magnificent atmosphere. With the availability of a compact 30ft private sailboat, you will have a chance to see magnificent views such as breathtaking spring flowers and autumnal leaves seasonally highlighting the outline of the lake. Water birds peacefully resting their wings, or snowy mountaintops in winter, including that of Mt. Hiei where Enryaku-ji, itself a UNESCO world heritage site sits located on the summit. All amidst a pleasant breeze experienced most of the year by cruising over the mirror-like calm water as you hear the gentle sound of wind and birdsong. Although guiding the sailboat along is mostly taken care by Ted, the captain,1st rate licensed boat operator and national licensed guide, you will also have a chance to occasionally take the helm while sailing under his instruction. When you tire from visiting the seemingly endless array of temples packed with so many tourists in Kyoto, this sailing adventure is a refreshingly promising choice for breaking away from the hustle and bustle of the city.

The Private Sailing Experience consists of two options, those of half-day sailing and of full-day sailing. Both options start with a 7:45AM departure from in front of Kyoto City Hall, and a transfer to the lake by a 25-minute train ride. The half-day tour (5 hours) allows for a brisk two-hour sail within the southern part of the lake, while in the one-day tour (9 hours), you will have a chance to enjoy almost six hours of sailing covering a much wider part of the lake to the north beyond Biwako Bride, as well as being welcomed to visit another yacht harbor to have a lunch break on the way. Both options include a safety lecture in the boat before steaming out of the harbor using textbooks designed for beginner sailors. During the tour, you will also be treated to the in-depth story of the lake and its historical relevance to Kyoto people as related by Ted, the representative of WaRaiDo Guide Networks. Both options are concluded in front of Kyoto City Hall after sailing.
