In respect for “Johnny Hillwalker,” who started the guided walking tour in English in 1996, we keep conducting the original WALK IN KYOTO, TALK IN ENGLISH tour in his namesake to guide you into the true lives of the craftsman and the people of Kyoto.

Highlights

WALK IN KYOTO, TALK IN ENGLISH was started by Mr. Hajime Hirooka, also known as Johnny Hillwalker. Born in 1930, he had worked as a professional tour guide exclusively for one tour operator for 34 years. After retiring from that company in 1996, he started his own private walking tours in Kyoto. The unique concept of the tour is to intentionally avoid famous but touristy spots, and instead, to introduce the true lives of the Kyoto people. Since its start, he has guided over 28,000 guests from around the world through the backstreets of Kyoto. The tour has been handed down to us and we started a project to further enhance the value of walking tour activities, and we have widened the choices of such walking tours as you can see here on this homepage.
