Kyoto Railway Museum
When the Shinkansen, or bullet train, was started in the year of the last Tokyo Olympics in 1964, steam locomotives were still in daily use in some regions in Japan. This gives you an idea of just how rapidly Japan's railway systems have been developed, in addition to the fact that the total length of operation has reached more than 27,000 km (16,777 miles). The Kyoto Railway Museum has a breathtaking exhibition of passenger cars, as well as diesel, electric and steam locomotives, many of which are still in running condition. To know the development of the railway system is to know the history of Japan's modernization, and the tour is an unmissable one.
